FOOT RHEUMATOLOGY

Did you know that your podiatrist may
be the first health care professional to
find rheumatologic causes of foot
pain. For example: rheumatoid
arthritis is a disease that affects the
entire body. There are certain lab
tests that I order to rule out
suspected Rheumatiod Arthritis
that manefest as foot pain. If
one were to order a rheumatiod
factor and this were to be positive
one should be careful not to assume
that there is not also a sero negative
arthridity present. What is to stop a
podiatric patient from having both
rheumatoid arthritis and gout at the
same time? Rheumatiod arthritis is a
sero positive arthridity and gout is a
sero negative artridity.

Before attempting surgical
correction why not see a
medical podiatrist that
emphasizes podiatric medicine
instead of a surgical podiatrist
that emphasizes podiatric
surgical approaches to
treating foot pain. If surgery
is needed the medical
podiatrist can always refer the
patient to see a surgical
podiatrist or the medical
podiatrist may be able to also
give podiatric surgical care.
Please understand in New
York both a medical podiatrist
or a surgical podiatrist is not
licensed to treat any other
part of the body other than
the foot. Furthermore the
definition of a podiatrist is a
limited licensed practioner that
is not a physician and is not a
medical doctor and did not go
to medical school for an
unlimited license. I went to
podiatric medical school
to graduate with the degree
DPM which is a limited
restricted license which in
New York is limited to treating
the foot.
